Dr Diesendorf originally trained as a physicist and applied mathematician and evolved into an interdisciplinary expert on climate solutions in the energy sector, focusing on renewable energy and energy policy. In the field of energy, he researches, consults and teaches on technological, economic, environmental, social, political and policy aspects of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
At various times, he was a Principal Research Scientist in the CSIRO Division of Mathematics & Statistics; Professor of Environmental Science and Founding Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures at UTS; and Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies at UNSW Sydney.
