Professor Evans is an expert in land-atmosphere interactions including the coupled mechanisms that control the spread of extreme fire. His expertise also includes regional climate processes and regional climate change, and how these changes will impact future fire weather and the occurrence of extreme fires. Professor Evans works extensively with governments on understanding future climate changes and their impacts.

He is a Chief Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes at UNSW and the new ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, he was the lead modeller on the NSW/ACT Regional Climate Modelling (NARCliM) project, and is a member of the Science Advisory Committee of the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX).
